Did you like that title? Those words have been swimming around my head for the last year or so due to the fact that the media continues to bring up all kinds of trouble here in the United States. If it’s not racism, it’s the election. If it’s not police brutality, it’s the wage gap. If it is not this, it’s that. On and on we go and no one seems to be doing anything about it, other than stuffing the pockets of the news agencies with our clicks, likes and shares.
As a white male, I am often stereotyped as the source of the problem. On top of that, I am rarely invited to these types of discussions and so when I interject my opinion or perspective it is usually met with stiff resistance. I have found that a very popular tactic is to simply yell and label me a racist in an attempt to get me to stop talking. As I am passionate about true unity, this usually does not work on me, but I constantly see it throughout the various social media platforms and I’m sure you have seen it as well.
Simply put, I do not know what it is like to judge someone based on the color of their skin. However, I am very closely connected to several people that can make that assessment. Do a hate them for feeling that way? Absolutely not! Am I talking about only white people? Also, absolutely not! If we want to be clear on the racial problems here in America, we should probably start by accepting the fact that everyone can be racist. Everyone tends to make decisions and assessments based on surface value. If you continue to do that, you will find that you often make very bad decisions and arrive at the wrong assessment.
I know it is easy to buy into the media narrative that people are oppressed by other people. I also know that the same methods by which you use to get this negative information are also the same methods that allow you to escape. Although I do not have experience with racial discrimination, I certainly have plenty of experience with class discrimination. You may or may not know, but I am a poor white kid from a small farm town in the middle of nowhere. All you have to do is show up in hand me down clothes and you’ll know exactly what it feels like to be an outcast. If that’s not enough, try going to school and have to carry a special party gives you reduced lunch prices because your mother’s income doesn’t meet the poverty line.
Why do I say all of this? I say all of this because you are not oppressed. Although it may seem like it, you have the same opportunity I have. In fact, if you are a person of color, there are multiple organizations that are willing to give you the advantages that you seem to think that you do not have. Did you know that government being opportunities favor people of color, women, and the disabled? I’m sure you knew that already, but is rarely spoken about and quite easily forgotten. Am I mad about that? Absolutely not! I can appreciate programs like that to encourage diversity but what I absolutely despises when people are not grateful for these advantages provided through my tax dollars.
I know all about redlining. I know all about police brutality. I also know about online banking and I also know about police harassment. For every bad thing that is done to you I know of a bad thing you’re doing to someone else. With the massive amount of information that is being exchanged every day I would like to encourage you to use those resources to find people who are like you and now have success. Success always leaves clues and the best thing you can do is to do the things that other people did to be successful.
Are you a black person who feels oppressed by the world? Are you a woman who thinks she cannot advance because it is a man’s world? Are you a transgender that cannot get the things that you need? The short answer is that the world is not care. The market does not care where you are from or the color of your skin. What the market cares about is talent! Talent comes in many forms, including the arts, services, and the production of products.
In other words, you can literally create the world you want to live in. You don’t have to take the world as it is, like never before you have the power to shape your world. We’re coming up on 2021 and the availability of information has literally blown the doors off any one of your excuses. You need to simply looking here phone and you can find 1000 stories of people just like you living out the life that they want to live. What is stopping you? Only yourself.
If you find yourself not satisfied with where you are at right now, you possess everything you need to make a change. For instance, if you are a teacher and you don’t like the salary that you have, simply create a powerful LinkedIn profile and connect with other school districts that are willing to hire you and relocate you. If you’re not willing to do that, why are you complaining? Do you really want that much sympathy? You want the school district to simply pay you more money because you’re complaining about it? I have never understood why somebody so unhappy would never take the action may need to make their life better.
The consumer is in control, not Amazon. Don’t you know that over 80% of their products are made by small businesses? Don’t you know that Wal-Mart frequently provides sales contracts with small businesses? Not everything is made in China! The government is not out to get you, and the more you think that way the more unsuccessful you will be. Look at all the people on top of their game, are they busy making comments to crappy little online users? Now, they’re too busy making themselves even more successful.
Stop complaining about the 1%. Stop acting like you don’t have the power to get up there yourself. Get on YouTube and take a financial literacy class at no cost to you. Learn about compounding interest and how that is the key to long-term wealth. Stop complaining about all the rich people and do yourself a favor to become one. It does not matter what color you are, anybody can buy mutual funds and other kinds of stocks. Wall Street is not out to get you, but they are trying to outsmart you. Unfortunately for them, you have just as much information as they do. Unfortunately for you, you probably don’t have the discipline to get out there and learn something.
Stop blaming the school system for all of your problems. They are doing the best they can to provide a generalized education to millions of children all across this country. If you want to do something, get your degree and be a better teacher! Get a leadership certificate and go be a superintendent of schools if you care that much. Better yet, write a letter to your school district and let them know how you feel about it. Stop letting the news control your mind and think for yourself for once! No, the school is not designed for you and only you. Remember that you’re not that special and you’ll do much better in life.
I do not hate you. I want the best for you. You have the power to get the information you need. It does not cost you anything and nobody is standing in the way of what you need to succeed. Others have done it and so can you. Others are doing it right now and so can you. Minorities are being successful and so can you. Homosexuals are being successful and so can you. Trans genders are being successful and so can you. Stop with the excuses and start with the success.
